    Plate Size
    Straightening irons come in various plate sizes, the typical sizes being 1", 1.5" and 2", although there are also mini-flat irons with 1/2" plates. The plate size you choose will depend on the length and thickness of your hair. Most women with medium-length hair will opt for a 1" or 1.5" plate, while those with long, thick tresses may find a 2" plate more suitable for their needs. Women with short curls are in luck--mini-irons with 1/2" plates are extremely effective and the least expensive of all straighteners (the Sedu mini-flat iron costs around $50). Mini-flat irons are also suitable for travel and on-the-go touch-ups.
    Other Bells and Whistles
    When selecting your straightener, there are two other things to keep in mind: weight and heat settings. Straightening your hair is a wrist-intensive task. If you can shop for straighteners at a beauty supply store, pick them up first and see which ones feel good in your hand (the Sedu brand is noted for its ergonomic design and light weight). Also, some straightening irons are equipped with only one or two settings, so heat cannot be adjusted. As you will read below, using your iron on a setting that's too hot can damage your hair. A straightener with an adjustable setting will give you more options when it comes to achieving your desired results.
    Where to Buy?
    If you don't have a beauty supply store that sells salon equipment, you can always turn to the Internet to shop for your straightener. There are numerous beauty etailers, such as Folica.com and Beauty.com, that sell a wide selection of quality straighteners, as well as provide an area for customer reviews. You can also find out where straighteners can be found on sale or clearance by perusing forums found on sites such as NaturallyCurly.com and MakeupAlley.com---these sites also allow registered users to post reviews of the latest hot tools. If you stumble across a famous name brand straightener that's absurdly cheap, be wary. Nefarious foreign companies are not averse to plastering a cheap straightening iron with the "CHI" or "HAI" trademark. Before you put your hair through the plates, use a spray-in heat protectant to protect your hair from heat damage.
